During an open water passage, items such as the outboard engine, gas tank, paddles, etc., may be left in the dinghy if the seas are relatively flat and rain is not imminent.

It is suggested that FYC dinghies have both a stern and a bow line for mooring which should stay attached.

The line used to tow a dinghy is called a "painter".

The line used for towing FYC dinghies should be about one and a half times the length of the dinghy.

To reduce the risk of capsizing or taking on water, waves must be crossed bow first.

When landing on shore with breaking waves, it may be best to approach the shore backwards.

A dinghy should be towed in rough seas with the tow line long enough to reach the crest of a succeeding wave.

With the outboard motor "off" or in "neutral" gear, the motor can be used as a reliable rudder.

Polypropylene line is useful as a dinghy towing line because it can readily be made fast to a cleat.
